If you’ve ever wondered about the data behind all those dots in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for BI and Analytics, your curiosity is about to be satisfied. In their newest research paper, “Critical Capabilities for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms”, Gartner has essentially pulled back the curtain by giving clients a valuable tool that helps them understand vendor scores and find out which solution best fits their particular use case.

The Critical Capabilities study is a deep dive into a select group of companies (only 12 out of the 68 vendors from the Magic Quadrant were included in the Critical Capabilities report) that gives each vendor a score across 15 “critical capabilities” and 4 use cases.

According to Gartner, the critical capabilities are attributes that differentiate products in terms of quality and performance, and which users should consider as some of the most important criteria for acquisition decisions. The 15 critical capabilities identified by Gartner are:

• Analytic Dashboards & Content
• BI Platform Administration
• Business User Data Mashup
• Cloud Deployment
• Collaboration & Social Integration
• Customer Services
• Development and Integration
• Ease of Use
• Embedded BI
• Free Form Interactive Exploration
• Internal Platform Integration
• IT-Developed Reports and Dashboards
• Metadata Management
• Mobile
• Traditional Styles of Analysis
One of the most valuable aspects of the new report is that Gartner then weighs each capability in terms of its relative importance for 4 specific use cases – Centralized BI, Decentralized Analytics, Governed Data Discovery, and OEM/Embedded BI – which helps companies evaluate BI solutions based on their specific needs.

Birst received the highest scores among all vendors for the Centralized BI and OEM/Embedded BI use cases:

In addition, Birst received the highest scores for 5 critical capabilities – Customer Services, BI Platform Administration, Cloud Deployment, Embedded BI, and Traditional Styles of Analysis – and was ranked # 2 in Ease of Use, Internal Platform Integration, and Metadata Management.

Gartner’s Critical Capabilities study is an important tool for any organization trying to find the right BI and Analytics solution for their specific use case. At Birst we are thrilled to be named the leading vendor for Centralized BI and OEM/Embedded BI, and to receive such high marks in areas like Platform Administration, Cloud Deployment, and Ease of Use. We believe these scores reflect Birst’s ability to deliver powerful BI capabilities that support enterprise-caliber requirements and give end users the ease of use they demand while enabling IT and business leaders to ensure consistency and trust in the data.
