Every year, Gartner releases a highly anticipated and widely read set of reports that rate businesses across a variety of technology industries. These reports position technology companies in what Gartner calls its “Magic Quadrant,” rating them as “niche players,” “visionaries,” “challengers,” or “leaders.” It’s been an exciting year for Birst, with the introduction of a variety of new features and products as well as significant user base expansion across the globe, and annual reports like Gartner’s “Magic Quadrant” give us a chance to reflect on the progress we’ve made, and to look towards our future role in the Business Intelligence industry.

We’re proud to note that Birst has been named a ‘Challenger’ in Gartner’s “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms” report1. The report presents a global view of Gartner’s opinion of software vendors that should be considered by organizations seeking to use business intelligence (BI) platforms, and Gartner analysts placed Birst in the Challenger Quadrant based on completeness of vision and ability to execute.

This reflects what we see as a larger trend in the Business Intelligence and Analytics industry. Newer upstarts provide faster, more flexible solutions, making insights available to everyday business users, not just data scientists and advanced analytics teams.

This rising profile of new BI providers comes along with what many refer to as the growing appeal of cloud-based BI solutions like Birst, noting in the 2014 report that a greater number of businesses plan to run their BI in the cloud this year.

“Of all companies in the Magic Quadrant survey, a total of 45% say they run their BI in either a private, public or hybrid cloud or plan to do so over the next 12 months (up from only approximately 30% one year ago),” the report stated. “This shows a strong cloud BI momentum that will benefit the specialists in this space like Birst (and 1010data, GoodData).”

Over the past year, Birst has strengthened its leadership status in cloud-based BI by unveiling multiple industry-leading products and services, including Birst Visualizer, new Solution Accelerators for Recurring Revenue and Operational Analytics, integration with Amazon Redshift and the Birst Open Connector Framework. We’ve also expanded our international presence, opening offices in the UK, the Middle East and Australia along with geo-specific partnerships in South Korea and China.

While we appreciate the recognition of our progress, we continue to look toward the future, in which Birst makes BI available to an ever-growing audience, helping all users make strong data-driven business decisions. That is the ultimate promise of BI, and we are thrilled to deliver on this promise as the momentum behind BI continues to build.
