Independent research studies by recognized industry analysts are an important tool for companies evaluating software solutions and the vendors that offer them. For vendors, these studies can act as unbiased confirmation of their claims. Meanwhile, customers can use this research to help them navigate a crowded market and find products that are best tailored for their particular use cases.
Gartner’s 2017 Critical Capabilities for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms is a companion report to its annual Magic Quadrant. This Critical Capabilities research evaluates products included in the 2017 “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms” on 15 critical capabilities in support of the five main use cases for BI and analytics platforms. The use cases include Centralized BI Provisioning, Decentralized Analytics, Governed Data Discovery, OEM/Embedded BI, and Extranet Deployment.
The Critical Capabilities report is unique in the way it looks at vendors because, while the Magic Quadrant analyzes factors such as market presence, marketing strategy, and sales execution, the Critical Capabilities study is focused exclusively on product capabilities. This makes the Critical Capabilities the definitive guide to understanding which vendors offer the solutions that best fit your organization’s specific use case. In the 2017 edition of the report, Gartner writes “The modern BI platform includes the broad range of capabilities for agile, interactive visual exploration, as well as governance and report distribution.”
This year, Birst received the highest scores for OEM/Embedded BI and Extranet Deployment use cases, and the third and fourth highest scores for the Governed Data Discovery and Agile Centralized BI Provisioning use cases, respectively.

In our opinion, Gartner’s recognition validates Birst’s vision for networked analytics. Networked analytics is all about connecting people and teams throughout organizations via a shared network of data and insights that everybody can access and extend.
Here are some ways leading organizations around the world are leveraging the benefits of Birst’s networked analytics platform:
ENABLING DATA DISCOVERY WITHOUT SACRIFICING GOVERNANCE
As Gartner notes, “As demand from business users for pervasive access to data discovery capabilities grows, IT wants to deliver on this requirement without sacrificing governance — in a managed or governed data discovery mode”. Birst’s modern analytics technology supports this model by deploying virtual tenants of analytics that are connected to a central and reusable semantic layer. This approach enables decentralized use in a controlled manner.
MODERN CLOUD ARCHITECTURE FOR BUSINESS AGILITY AT SCALE
Birst’s multi-tenant cloud architecture delivers cost savings, agility and reliability that only the most modern BI platforms can deliver — and that today’s nimble enterprises need to compete. Birst can be deployed in the public cloud, in AWS, or on-premises (as a virtual appliance) with the exact same code base, upgrade path and level of support.
EMPOWERING THE BUSINESS WITH SELF-SERVICE DATA PREPARATION
Birst’s new Connected Data Prep capability give business people a visual, drag-and-drop, user-friendly experience that enables them to effortlessly combine, transform and organize data from multiple sources into an analytic-ready structure. Connected Data Prep presents the results of transformations applied in real time and displays a graphical representation of data lineage so it’s easy to understand where data comes from and what it means. LEADING THE WAY IN MOBILE ANALYTICS
Birst’s industry-leading mobile capabilities are delivered via native apps for iOS and Android devices that empower people to make decisions anywhere, anytime. Birst Mobile employs a “design once, use everywhere” approach that uses responsive design to automatically rotate, resize or adjust the layout of your content to fit your screen. Birst Mobile also offers offline interactivity so users can continue to explore their data in remote areas or in buildings where WiFi is not available.
