Friction-free analytics sounds cool, but does it have real meaning?  For Birst, it does.  It’s about reducing and eliminating the barriers that stand in the way of business users to find the analytical insights they need.  We’ve long sought to do this through empowering business to self-serve whether that means building its own dashboards or reports, adding new data sources on-the-fly, and giving easy to use capabilities that diminish reliance on IT or others to get the answers needed.

Schwabbing It

My father is a perfectionist. Truth be told, my mother is too. To both of them, it was far more offensive to do a task to 75% completion than it was to leave the task undone altogether. And so it became that our wonderful neighbors, the Schwabs, became synonymous with half-completing tasks. You see, the Schwabs celebrated every event and every season with unparalleled joy; none more than Christmas, for which their house was adorned with 1,000's of colorful lights – complete with reindeer on the roof and everything.

Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now

QlikTech Jumps the Shark

A shocking thing happened last week: a red hot, rapidly growing, recently-public QlikTech decided to strap on the waterskis and do its best imitation of Fonzi jumping the shark in the infamous Happy Days episode. (For those of you too young to remember 70's TV shows or those unfamiliar with "jumping the shark", click here). In Fonzi's case, the writers had run out of ideas and begun looking outside the core formula to try to keep the show interesting.

Data Discovery, dashboards and visualization are among common ways of delivering business analytics to end users which is noticeable by the popularity of desktop discovery tools such as Tableau & Qlikview. For the most part, visualization does a great job of summarizing information in an interactive and graphical format. Is it, however, robust and rich enough to act as a substitute for enterprise business intelligence?

As a marketing professional, I’ve been working with industry analysts my entire career.  Industry analysts play an important role in educating the market and often provide guidance for organizations seeking advice on technology directions.  Similarly, vendors work closely with the analyst community keeping them abreast of their companies’ progress, new offerings, and strategic directions.  Analysts can have a lot of influence on technology adoption and a result, vendors with new technologies or different approaches to industry issues, will often spend considerable time with the analyst comm

The Buzz at Birst FORWARD

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. It was the sound of voices exchanging ideas, sharing solutions. Buzz. Buzz. It was a low rumble that occasionally heightened in pitch as attendees greeted each other with the enthusiasm of people who share a common vision. Buzz. It was the sound of Birst FORWARD, Birst’s annual user conference, held last week in San Francisco.

Nucleus Research, a boutique analyst firm based in Boston which focuses on “investigative information technology research,” released their Technology Value Matrix for Analytics for 2012.  The matrix seeks to evaluate vendors that have a global presence and provide functionality in the four core analytics areas: business intelligence (BI), performance management (PM), predictive analytics, and big data.   We were delighted to learn that Birst was named a “Leader” in its Analytics Value Matrix that published today.  Birst joins the company of some larger (and better known) vendors in the busi

There is an air of excitement at Birst, as the company buzzes with activity around planning Birst’s first annual user conference – Birst FORWARD 2012. The user conference is scheduled for May 21st-23rd at the Hyatt Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.

A cool new capability that is now shipping with Birst 5 is our visual dataflow framework. This drag and drop GUI gives administrators a way to define and visualize the relationships of their multi-dimensional data. It’s the way he or she would manage their different data sources and do the logical modelling required for advanced analytics. Through it, an administrator can quickly and easily build and then visualize their entire ER (i.e. entity relationship) diagram and the corresponding star schema model of their data.
